SUMMER HAPPENINGS

Summer is a time for warm weather and vacations in the part of the U.S. that we're from. Children are home from school and schedules are more relaxed. Vacations to the beach and family reunions are planned. Many people look forward all year to summertime and hate to see it come to an end.

Here in Ouaga the summer is quite different from summer in the eastern U.S. but there are definitely some changes in our regular routine. I'm on break from my position as librarian at the International School of Ouagadougou and our daughter, Elizabeth, is home for the summer before beginning graduate school this fall. We have been put in charge of our annual field conference, so we've been working on plans for that as well.

Our young church continues to need our presence while we seek to develop local leadership, so we are not able to take a vacation this year. Steve is holding down the fort for a couple of weeks while I finish my last graduate classes in Germany and embark on my thesis project. Elizabeth is helping out with hospitality and caring for our home and working part-time at the American Language Center teaching English.

The brightest highlight of our summer will be a long-awaited visit from our daughter Sarah and her family that will begin next week. We are all anxious to show our son-in-law, Jordan, where Sarah grew up so their visit will involve a road trip to Safané, the village that was Sarah's first home. Spending time with our amazing grandson, Levi, is a huge gift from the Lord for us!

Here in Burkina the summer vacation starts for local students in July. There is a lot of pressure for those who have to take national exams either to graduate from middle school or from high school. Without a passing grade a student cannot move up to the next level and will have to repeat the year. It is a tension-filled time for these students and their families as they wait for results, and we have particularly been supporting the students in our church in prayer during this time.

We've been working on organizing some summer activities for the young people in our church and neighborhood. Elizabeth will soon be starting a weekly gathering of young adult girls. We are praying for spiritual fruit from these activities.

All in all we are having a great summer and I know we will hate to see it come to an end!
